Resumo
Desde
a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a globalização, as novas tecnologias têm

Abstract
Trash
catchers constructing a new culture: separating the trash and ecological
importance
Since
the Second World War, globalization and new technologies have created
wealth for a few, and increased unemployment for those without the needed,
specialized skills. To
survive, those left out have created new ways to earn a living. Trash
catchers are an example of this new phenomenon. In Uberlândia, a
nationally important and successful business center in the state of Minas
Gerais, there are also people living a marginal existence. Some of these
are trash catchers, who have found a way to survive, but in doing have
also developed an activity that provides important benefits to society:
recycling paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and fiberglass. Because these
items do not end up in landfills and rivers, the ecology and society
benefit. It would be interesting to determine whether these people
understand their important contribution to the environment, and whether
their example will encourage the greater society to recycle more materials.
